MERIAM, Larry Grant |
|
CANOE DESIGNER - PADDLER
Larry would split his time between Cochrane, Alberta, and his cabin at Cocolalla, Idaho. He enjoyed his work with designing trailers, canoes, paddling down the river and the people by his side. No matter where he was or what he was doing he was always happy to sit, have a pint or two and spend the night talking about old times, old friends, and telling paddling stories. Larry's greatest joy was his grand-kids. He would make it to as many of their sporting events, performances, and activities as he could. He loved watching them ride their bikes, playing at the farm, paddling their kayaks and he was always happy to have a little helper in the garden or with whatever project he had going. |

NATIONAL PARK ADVOCATE
Kay started working in Yosemite National Park during the summer of 1949, where she met her husband, John Merriam, who was a climbing ranger. She and John were married on August 14, 1960 in Arcadia, California. They moved to Idaho in 1964, where John was the chair of the Department of Economics at Idaho State University (ISU). As she described, "our attraction to Idaho was based on backpacking for both of us; fishing and climbing for John and having places to ride a horse for me. We very quickly discovered that the amazing beauty of Idaho's mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, wildlife and unique wildflowers and trees were often nicely hidden from highways. The most compelling of all the trails and destinations we explored was the White Clouds." She and John became deeply involved in a grass-roots effort to curtail molybdenum mining in the White Clouds and in 1970 the area was established as a wilderness study area and protected from becoming an open pit mine. After John Merriam died in 1973, Idaho Senator Frank Church asked Kay if she would like to have a mountain named after John in honor of his efforts. She selected the mountain adjacent to Castle Peak in the White Clouds, now known as Merriam Peak. In 2015, Merriam Peak and the surrounding area was officially established as the Boulder-White Cloud Wilderness as part of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. |

ORGANIZER
Dr. Merriam was a principal leader and organizer behind the Meriam's Corner festivities held at the Minuteman National Historical Park each April. Patriots hid behind the Meriam house on April 19, 1975 and fired on the British troops who were in retreat back to Lexington and Boston. Typically held one weekend before Patriot's Day by the Village of Concord, the commemoration includes a parade that ends at the Meriam house. Merriam descendants are invited to participate and march behind the Mer(r)iam banner. A business meeting, tours of the house and an evening banquet are typical of the events. Dr. Merriam's shoes are big shoes to fill in continuing the events, but organizers vowed to continue. |

SCUDDER, Galen F |
|
PHYSICIAN & HOSPITAL ADMINISTRATOR:
"In 1920, Galen Fisher Scudder (a graduate of Princeton University and Cornell Medical School) arrived in India. He was appointed medical superintendent of the Ranipet hospital, with the responsibility of building the Scudder Memorial Hospital on $25,000. Galen went on a furlough from 1933 to 1934 and was replaced by John Scudder, the great-grandson of John Scudder Sr. From 1940 to 1945, Galen performed war service. He went to Rangoon and, after its fall, was the district medical officer in Coimbatore. Galen donated part of his government salary to the Ranipet hospital, where he returned in 1947 with surgical equipment and a large sterilizer. He added an X-ray machine, which was a gift of his Princeton University classmates and the Doris Duke Foundation, by 1953. A wing was added to the hospital for the X-ray machine, laboratory and blood bank, and four private male wards were built.[10] Galen retired on June 1, 1954, after 35 years of service. With his departure, a century of his family's association with the Arcot Mission ended." |

VOLUNTEER
STUDY HALL MONITOR
She was always outspoken and didn't care who she offended with her opinions. You always knew where you stood with her, even if you didn't like where that was.
When my dad and aunts were growing up, she worked as a study hall monitor for the local middle and high schools, for which she received a pension the rest of her life. She and my grandfather moved to Florida when they retired, and after his death she moved to the Houston area to be near my dad and our family.
When she was in her late 80s and early 90s she volunteered almost every day at the local elementary school to help those kids who were having trouble with reading. She received a number of awards and thanks, both official and unofficial, from parents, teachers, and school district administrators. |
