GALLERNO, John Edward |
844485 John Edward Galerno 1889-1984
John Gallerno joined the 149th Battalion on April 1, 1916. He was an unmarried labourer living at no fixed address in Sarnia, Ontario. Enlisting in Sarnia he stated that Sophia Vozart (spelled elsewhere in the service record as Voissard) of Wallaceburg, Ontario was his next-of-kin. She was also his mother.
His service with the 149th Battalion was not uneventfil. He was AWL four times and was transferred to the Special Service Company on March 20, 1917. He then was transferred to the 153rd Battalion on April 2, 1917. This is unusual and without seeing the Daily Orders (DO) it is hard to determine the rationale behind this transfer.
He suffered from bronchitis and wash hospitalized at the Military Hospital in London from March 17 to 30, 1917.
On April 27, 1917, he embarked for England aboard the SS Olympic and arrived there on May 7, 1917.
He had set his Assigned Pay to a Mrs. Hannah Merriam before he was posted overseas.
He served in England with the 25th, then the 4th Reserve Battalions at Witley and was TOS with the 18th Battalion on June 9, 1918.
He arrived in France at the No. 2 Canadian Infantry Base Depot on Mark 29, 1918, and then was transferred to the Canadian Corp Reinforcement Camp on April 3, 1918. He suffered from an illness and was transferred to No. 59 Casualty Clearing Station. He was suspected of suffering from Pulmonary Tuberculoeus.
Transferred to England for further treatment, he was TOS from the 18th Battalion on June 9, 1918 and after several transfers was sent to Kinmel Park Camp for repatriation, sailing from Liverpool for Canada aboard the SS Regina on March 22, 1919.
He was discharged on April 1, 1919, at London, Ontario.
He passed away at Parkwood Hospital, London, Ontario, on June 1, 1982.

GRAVES, General William Sidney |
United States Army Major General. Born in Mount Calm, Texas, his father was a Southern Baptist minister. After high school he received an appointment to the US Military Academy at West Point, New York, graduating in June 1889. He was stationed in Wyoming, where he met and married Katherine Boyd, who was the niece of his commanding officer. He served in the Spanish-American War (1898), fought at the Battle of Caloocan as a company commander against Philippine insurgents during the Philippine-American War of 1899, and remained there until 1902. He later served in World War I. In 1918 he was given command of the US Army 8th Division and was sent to Siberia under orders from President Woodrow Wilson, joining the Allied forces of Britain, France, and Japan to maintain stability in the eastern part of Russia during the country's civil unrest between the Tsarist government and the Bolshevik forces and not to lend any military assistance to either side. The primary mission of the American Expeditionary Forces was to ensure the Trans-Siberian railroad remained operational, all while protecting supplies to anti-Bolshevik forces and providing for the safe conduct of foreign allied troops, primarily Czechs. In April 1920, after the Czech forces were evacuated, US troops left Siberia In July 1925 he was promoted to Major General and retired in 1928, with 29 years of active military service. Among his decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal (2), the Philippine Campaign Medal, the World War I Victory Medal, the Order of the Rising Sun (Japan), the Order of the Crown of Italy, and the Czechoslovak War Cross. He died in Shrewsbury, New Jersey at the age of 74. |
